The Joy of Movement
Our bodies were designed to move and carry us gracefully throughout the lifespan. Healthy movement that is pain-free and with purpose and intention is the key to a joy-filled life. Our bodies are truly miraculous, we breathe over 24,000 times per day without even thinking about it. Our heartbeat continues night and day circulating our blood to energize, deliver nutrition and oxygen to all of our cells. Our organs work effortlessly to help our bodies maintain homeostasis and balance. There is constant “movement” in our bodies without us giving much thought to its processes.
Joyful movement is a simple activity that can bring a deep sense of connection and pleasure to your daily life. Talking the dog for a walk and noticing the new spring shoots bursting through the earth. Taking time to notice the subtle changes in the seasons and earth while playing with your kids. Joyful movement can be dance, yoga, breathing deeply and noticing the calm and presence you feel, working in your garden on a cool spring day, or taking a beach bike ride on a warm summer day and noticing the shimmering waves as the sunlight dances off of them.
Joyful movement is about finding activities that you love to do, that gently move your body in the way it way designed to move-effortlessly. It is about breathing deeply into your being and feeling a sense of awe and wonder and gratitude for our lives. It naturally incorporates range of motion, strengthening, purpose and a deep connection to our minds and spirits. To be truly alive and present is a joy-filled experience.
Start simple and practice daily. Take mini-breaks from sitting at the computer or your day job and breath while reaching up towards the sky. Flex and rotate your spinal column, your back will thank you. Take a walk with Fido, you will both be better for it!
