Pink is the New Orange and Black.  October is Breast Cancer month.

” Your body holds deep wisdom. Trust it, Learn from it. Nourish it.”

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985, through a partnership with The American Cancer Society. The familiar pink ribbon is a global symbol for Breast Cancer Awareness. Today we know that 1 in 8 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her life. Many women will survive, some will not. Early detection is better than cure, prevention is key and is essential to increase survival rates. A monthly self-exam is a great way to begin breast self-care. In fact, a first symptom of breast cancer is often a lump or mass, that may be detected with a self-exam. Some women today choose thermography, a procedure less invasive than mammograms. Thermography uses heat to detect changes in tissue. There is no radiation involved, and breast are not compressed during the procedure. The FDA warns that thermography is not a standalone tool for breast cancer screenings.

So, the gold standard remains, a classic mammogram one time per year starting at age 40. Mammograms detect up to 87% of breast cancers.  As always, speak with your physician and find out what your choices are, do your own research and make an informed decision.  Make breast health a priority. Next blog we will discuss simple and effective ways to facilitate breast health and discuss what breast cancer rehabilitation is.
