Manual Therapy---What is the Difference??

There are many types of manual therapy to choose from these days. So, what is the difference when you want to get a massage, but do not know what to ask for.  At Luna Therapy, we offer many modalities, but 3 basic massages that facilitate different therapeutic benefits and outcomes.

·         Classic Swedish Massage is the basis for all bodywork and sometimes referred to as a traditional massage.  Swedish massage includes long strokes, kneading strokes, percussion, and rhythmic tapping and friction. It is deeply relaxing and benefits may include: stress reduction, increased flexibility, decreased pain, rehabilitation for muscle injuries.

·         Medical Massage is outcome-based massage, primarily addressing a specific problem, chronic or acute condition. Medical massage may use a broader set of modalities, such as trigger point therapy or myofascial release techniques, stretching, PNF, cupping therapy and joint mobilization to offer aid in muscle recovery and postural restoration. Postural restoration can help reposition the body and muscle alignment, a home exercise program may further retrain the neuro-muscular system to facilitate proper structural alignment.

·         Lymphatic Massage or Manual Lymph Drainage specifically works with the lymph system and is mapped to facilitate greater fluid drainage via the lymph system. It is a gentle, rhythmical, circular stroke that always moves towards the heart. Lymphatic drainage can help with blood circulation and tissue regeneration, increasing lymph flow by removing excess interstitial fluid, and improve immune function. A lymphatic massage can help keep you healthy by detoxification of the systems fluids. It is highly beneficial for post-surgical swelling, and the treatment of lymphedema and lipodema.

Choosing the right massage depends on the outcome you wish to receive. Luna Therapy offers wellness packages to help promote better self-care and outcome-based benefits.

To your health!!
