Awakening
“Those who look outside dream…those who look within awaken.”
Throughout history every religious tradition has spoken of the soul and awakening. Spiritual awakening is the art of remembering who we truly are and reclaiming our inner wisdom, a not-so-easy feat in the modern world that is filled with noise, chaos, and distractions. Awakening the spirit can manifest in many ways through a life crisis, death, or giving birth. Most wisdom traditions of the world use prayer, meditation and fasting as a path to the divine, and agree that the soul must find its own inner light and path. Sacred texts are but a signpost, monasteries, religious services, and celebrations are another. The true work of awakening is up to each and every individual, like a lotus flower with many petals, the soul awakens petal by petal.
There is a positive correlation between a healthy spirituality and psychological wellbeing. Spirituality can relieve the stress of everyday life, especially when directed with intentional practice, such as mindfulness meditation or prayer. Studies abound that people with a healthy spiritual connection (think “Blue Zones”) have a greater life purpose, deep and meaningful relationships, cultivate joy, abundance, and peace. And who doesn’t want that?
There are many ways to begin the path towards awakening and a deeper connection to your life. It could start with a daily walk in nature, turning off your electronic devices in the evening, taking a few moments to reflect and breathe. Nurturing yourself with simple food, spending quality time with a pet or loved ones, reading an inspirational book, practicing self-care and scheduling a massage or acupuncture appointment. The important thing is to make the time for yourself and your soul.
